Green Labs Event - A Simple Path For You

Personal Note From Patrick, The Editor

Hi Reader, how about I sketch out what a sustainability journey can look like?

I believe this is valuable because it helps you prepare and know what to expect at each step.

That’s also why, on the 15th and 16th of October, you’ll learn everything you need for a fun and smooth journey.

Of course, every journey is unique. But since many of us begin out of sheer curiosity, it’s easy to end up reinventing the wheel.

So, here’s what your journey might look like:

Today's Topic:
A Structure for Sustainbility

How each step of the journey might look like for you

A Practical Framework For You

Having an idea of what your journey might look like is more important than you think.

Voluntary efforts often fade over time. Knowing what your path could look like helps you decide how far you want to go and stay committed along the way.

1. Getting Started

All that matters is taking action - no matter how small. The first step is always the hardest, but once you’re in motion, it becomes much easier to keep going.

Talk to Attend: 1st Talk – 15th October – Patrick Penndorf (Schedule)

Bonus Resource: A Guide to Getting Started

2. Knowing What to Do

After tackling the low-hanging fruits, it’s valuable to see what else you can improve. Learn from what others have done and get inspired.

Talk to Attend: 2nd Talk – 15th October – Gaya Kasi

Bonus Resource: A Review of Sustainable Practices

3. Planning Change Safely

Planning ahead provides structure, helps you identify safe and feasible changes, and makes progress easier to track.

Talk to Attend: 3rd Talk – 15th October – Tim King

Bonus Resource: Slide Deck: How to Drive Change Safely

4. Finding Allies

Once you can explain sustainability in science to others, it’s time to find people who share your passion. Working together lets you share tasks and celebrate victories as a team.

Talk to Attend: 3rd Talk – 16th October – Fanny Yuen

Bonus Resource: How to Convince Colleagues

5. Transforming Culture

Beyond daily lab practices, new innovations - like bioplastics and advanced instruments - can place you at the forefront of sustainable change.

Talks to Attend: 1st & 2nd Talks – 16th October – Jan Bebermeier & Scott Weitze

Bonus Resource: What Are Bioplastics Really?

6. Getting Deep into the Details

Consider getting your lab certified and exploring advanced topics that few others have mastered.

Talk to Attend: 4th Talk – 15th October – Philipp Lübbert

Bonus Resource: Tips for Instruments You Must Know

7. Passing on the Passion

You may have colleagues, students, or mentees who want to learn more. For the first time, resources are available to help them get started and build on your experience.

Talk to Attend: 4th Talk – 16th October – Marilee Benore

Bonus Resource: Tips for Sharing Sustainability

Some Helpful Tips

On the 15th of October, I’ll also share our full freezer guide live — something no one else has ever put together before.

But here’s my biggest tip for your sustainability journey: relax.

It may sound strange, but you’ll never reach a zero-impact lab - it’s simply impossible. So don’t stress if your first attempts at change don’t work out right away.

Keeping your passion alive is what truly matters. Eventually, you’ll find solutions - maybe in a new lab, or with a new approach.

Also, stay connected. Find people, initiatives, or content that keep you engaged - not just to stay informed, but to remind yourself that the journey is fun!

That’s exactly why I started writing the Weekly Sustainability Snack - and why having passionate colleagues makes this whole process both meaningful and enjoyable.

Because only when you enjoy the journey, when it energizes and inspires you, will you truly unleash your full potential.

Personal Note from Patrick, the Editor Hi Reader, what do you associate with procurement? For many people, it’s a technical term linked to paperwork and frustration. However, my goal is to show that procurement is much more tangible, and often simpler, than it seems. Let’s start by exploring what more sustainable purchasing of lab equipment involves and why it matters to you: Today's Lesson: Understanding Procurement What sustainable purchasing means and why it matters Number of the Day...

Personal Note From Patrick, The Editor Hi Reader, ever thought about more sustainable laboratory instruments? Lower energy consumption, sample volumes, and reagent use - but how can this be achieved without compromising performance? To show you, today’s sponsor - Waters - shares some unique behind-the-scenes insights. Over the past two years, I’ve worked with them to create resources that help you reduce the footprint of research. Here, we explore how improvements in HPLC and MS systems can...

Personal Note from Patrick, the Editor Hi Reader, laboratories can save plastics, reagents, and time through robotic automation. We discussed these advantages last time, and I recently posted about how you might finance your purchase - but everything has a flip side. That means if we implement automation incorrectly, we might end up with a much higher footprint. So, how do we do it safely? Today's Lesson: The Risks of Automation The potential downsides of modernizing labs Number of the Day...
