Green Education – Current Innovations You Must Know About

Personal Note from Patrick, the Editor

Hi Reader, there is a lot of innovation happening in green labs.

Last week, we held our summit, with some of the biggest companies worldwide participating.

What became very clear to me is that change is becoming easier than ever before.

Here are my 3 key takeaways from the event, as well as the recording:

Today's Lesson: The State of Innovation

Where is the green labs field heading?

Number of the Day

Over the past five years, I have collected resources that I shared during this summit, hoping they'll give you a fantastic overview to convince yourself and your colleagues of what is possible. Moreover, over the past five years, companies like Labcon have participated and presented new innovations - proving that some manufacturers work as hard on solutions as we do. Fittingly, we had five talks in which innovations for the laboratory were presented - here is what you need to know:

Innovations for Greener Labs

For the past few years, the community has driven much of the progress.

We grassroots advocates have tried to make change happen despite considerable doubt, concern, and resistance.

However, this is changing. Support from manufacturers and third parties is accelerating.

My first takeaway is that we're seeing innovations in almost every area.

  • At our summit, Eppendorf presented biobased tubes, tips, and plates.
  • LAM-X introduced a Western blot membrane made of polycaprolactone that reduces background while enhancing sensitivity.

What Once Was Impossible…

My second takeaway is that we're seeing innovations in areas where we would never have expected improvements.

  • Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, presented biobased HPLC solvents – acetonitrile, methanol, etc.
  • And instead of FBS, Media City Scientific provides chemically defined alternatives.
  • Labcon has a pipette tip box made entirely from recycled laboratory plastics.

The Good and the Bad

I guess we are living in one of the most exciting times of laboratory sustainability.

However, despite all this progress, we still have to work together.

At the end of the summit, I talked about a company that seems to be actively manipulating and misleading you.

Greenwashing is real, and it's still happening.

Yes, I would argue there is a split among those companies that want to support you and those that merely want your money.

However, the green community holds together - my conversation with Ben Gray from Sustainable Steps, as well as the participation of Elanor Campbell, shows that.

Applying the Knowledge

If you want to dive deeper, the recording of our summit is ready.

If you set the resolution to 144p, you can also listen to it like a podcast on your phone by streaming it.

Importantly, I have prepared an overview with key resources we shared during the summit. You can find it in the description of the recording!

But now, here you go:

We are currently considering hosting another event in summer.

Personal Note from Patrick, the Editor Hi Reader, there is one very well-known company that is lying to you. I am talking about manipulating data and greenwashing. More about that later today. Here is your link to join. But to stay positive, today you will also hear from a scientist turned entrepreneur. Dr. Katie Day turned her passion into a company that helps prevent bovine fetuses from being slaughtered for FBS. The advantage? The alternative to FBS is chemically-defined and more reliable....

Personal Note from Patrick, the Editor Hi Reader, today and tomorrow are big days! First, here is the line-up, and here is the link for you to join. Why are we so excited? Because we believe we can bring you something truly unique. Let me explain and share a few news: Greener LabsDay #1 4 PM Berlin | 11 AM New YorkCheck Out Your Time Transforming Science in No Time For the first talk, I've been going through all the literature I've read over the past 5 years. Personal Note from Patrick, the Editor Hi Reader, how have your past few weeks been? Stressful? Understandable... That's why I want our event to be a chance for you get a little room to breathe, and a step away from all the pressure. Because making your lab greener shouldn't be another stressful task. It should be something enjoyable, rewarding, and, above all, doable. But can it really be that easy?I've brought you two resources and a little metaphor: Getting Ready for Wednesday and Thursday...
