Hi Reader, as we were limited in time during our event, I thought I share a very personal lesson with you here.
This piece comes courtesy of Corning Life Sciences.
Having them as a sponsor of our communications allows me to get a few more looks behind the curtain.
This matters to me so much because for a long time, I wasn't sure whether companies would support us scientists.
Here’s what you should know and a few special innovations for you:
A Deeper Dive Into Innovations
What Corning Life Science has been working on to help you make your lab greener:
Why Innovativeness Matters So Much
When I first started my journey in sustainability, I wondered why so few companies took action to support us scientists.
That was about five years ago - and ever since then I leanred a lot that we normally do not get to see outside the lab.
The ACT-Ecolabel 2.0 includes a section on innovation - giving you a good idea of what companies invest. Corning went so far as to obtain the My Green Lab® ACT Ecolabel® for their Axygen® HybridRack™ to set a sign for transparency - check out here.
Not only did I found out that a simple google search can do a lot, but I also learned to appreciate the value of innovation.
For us as consumers, it’s obvious that greener products are better.
But behind every sustainable product are millions of dollars and thousands of working hours invested in research and development.
And once a concept is found, it still needs to be approved, production lines must be adapted, and customers informed.
In 2023, Corning won the Responsible Supplier Program Collaboration Award from Avantor®. Moreover, they won the Fisher Scientifc EU Supplier award this year too.
That’s why I’m so happy to work with companies like Corning Life Sciences - because they don’t just innovate, they also invest in helping you understand and adopt these innovations.
You have to keep in mind that there are still many companies from which you haven’t heard about any sustainable innovations — developing greener products is not yet the standard!
By using these innovative products, you secure three major benefits:
Reduced footprint - improving your reports to funding bodies and governmental institutions.
Better performance - for example, through enhanced handling or larger surface areas.
Continued innovation - companies will only keep improving sustainability if we, as scientists, choose greener options.
This last point is crucial. I’ve already heard companies say, “We might stop production since it seems scientists are not truly interested.”
So, once again, I want to show you what innovation can look like - and the tremendous reductions in environmental impact that are possible when a company commits to exploring new solutions:
Less Plastic for Your Tips
The Axygen® HybridRack™ Pipette Tip Rack can help you reduce your impact by saving a staggering 70% plastic!
It was designed as a paperboard–plastic hybrid to reduce plastic use while remaining robust enough for robotics, featuring a unique filter tip reload system.
And as a special treat, you can get your free sample as well!
A New Culture Flask
Corning® U-shaped Cell Culture Flask: due to its rounded shoulders and slimmer design, the flask contains 23% less plastic.
The rounded shoulders also make cell scraping easier and more efficient, while the surface area of 75 cm² remains the same.
You can also use the flask standing upright and pipette with one hand. Thanks to the broader opening, you can even access it with a 50 mL pipette - potentially allowing you to reuse the tip when handling large volumes.
And once again, I can allow you to claim your free sample.
A New Culturing System
The Corning HYPERStack® cell culture vessel has a substantial increase in cell growth surface area due to an ultra-thin gas-permeable film to eliminate the air gap within the vessel.
With Corning HYPERStack cell culture vessels, you can scale your production from the 6,000 cm2 of a single 12-layer module to multiple manifolded 36-layer modules delivering more than 500,000 cm2 of closed system cell growth area.
Similarly, the Corning High Yielding Performance Flask (HYPERFlask®) cell culture vessel offers 10 times the cell yield (1720 cm² growth area) with the footprint of a traditional 175 cm² flask.

A Summary Of Their Talk
In her talk, Gaya outlined 10 practical paths toward greater sustainability in the lab.
Here's also some inspiration on how to find other areas for more sustainable practices based on my personal experiences.
And as an extra bonus, our full list of sustainable practices.
